My website design service is primarily intended to help people running small businesses in the Highlands, especially those who have not previously used the Internet as a means of promoting their businesses. The following will give some ideas as to the service I offer.

Click on the headings for details of each section. Click here if you would like to see examples of my work - click on the heading "View My Work".

The Advantages of Having a Website

bullet

It's a very low-cost method of promoting your business.

bullet

Your business is in front of potential customers, worldwide, 24/7/365.

bullet

Your website is still working for you whilst you are at leisure or asleep, and is not dependent on your having a PC or leaving your PC switched on.

bullet

Your website acts not only as your colour brochure, but also as a means for potential customers to get in touch with you.

bullet

It gives your business a professional touch and will impress customers.

bullet

The Content of Your Website

bullet

It's for you to decide! Within reason, you can choose what to incorporate on your website, including text, graphics, pictures, photographs, response forms, maps, etc.

bullet

If you already have pictures, photos, text, etc., this can easily be utilised in your website. Alternatively, I can help you with suggested text, and will take photographs for you, if required. Even if you only have a few rough ideas scribbled down on paper, these can easily be converted into an attractive website!

bullet

Your website can comprise of a simple Home Page with text, one or two pictures, and contact information; alternatively, it can be made up of multiple pages. Ideally, the average business probably needs a website of at least 5 or 6 pages.

bullet

If your web is made up of multiple pages, a navigation system is needed to make it easy for visitors to find their way around.

bullet

It's possible to incorporate a downloadable "electronic" brochure, so that viewers can obtain an instant copy of your brochure which they download to their own computers and can then print out if they wish. This saves you time, postage and stationery in terms of not having to send out literature by post.

bullet

Do You Need To Have A Computer?

bullet

No! It is perfectly possible to have a website without having a PC of your own!

bullet

Whether or not you have a PC, your website is hosted by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) who runs a powerful computer which is on-line 24 hours a day, thus enabling people to visit your website at any time.

bullet

If you do not have a PC, customers cannot contact you by e-mail, but you can still offer other conventional methods of contact via fax, telephone, etc.

bullet

Up-Dating Your Website

bullet

You can change the content of your web at any time, and as often as you like. All you need to do is advise me as to what you wish to change.

bullet

Simple amendments such as changing a telephone number or correcting an address can be instructed very easily by telephone, fax, or e-mail.

bullet

It's a good idea to upgrade and develop your website from time to time, to keep the information fresh, and to entice people to keep re-visiting your web.

bullet

Getting People To Visit Your Website

bullet

Having a nice attractive website is not sufficient on its own - you need to get people to look at it!

bullet

Various keywords are hidden in the pages of your web to attract search engines.

bullet

I will submit your website to the main search engines for inclusion in their listings.

bullet

If you wish, submissions to a wider variety of search engines can be made via a "paid inclusion programme".

bullet

Web Hosting & Domain Name

bullet

A "web host" is the company providing the powerful computer facilities which make your website available to people browsing the Internet.

bullet

A "domain name" is the address of your website and is usually provided via your web host. Your domain name is unique to you, and you can choose your domain name provided that no one else has already taken that name. You should try to choose a name which is relevant to you or your business, and which can be easily remembered. Assuming that you trade primarily in Britain, you should preferably choose an address ending with ".co.uk".

bullet

I do not provide web hosting myself, but can put you in touch with a local company which does, and which I am very happy to recommend as they are host to a couple of my own websites.

bullet

Costs & Timescale

bullet

The cost of designing your website depends on what you wish to include in it and how much work you want me to do. However, a typical website for a small business would start at about £450, in addition to which you have the cost of your web hosting and domain name which would be £ 52.88 per year for an average website. Please contact me with details of your requirements, and I will be pleased to give you a firm quotation.

bullet

The timescale depends on the complexity of your proposed website and also my current workload. However, I would expect to be able to design an average website ready for you to consider within about 10 to 14 days. Subject to your approval and any required amendments, the site can then be published as soon as your domain name and web hosting have been arranged - normally within a further day or so.
